Getting Ready for the new School Year

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we understand that many of our students have unique strengths and challenges related to executive function. This newsletter aims to provide guidance on how to best support your neurodiverse child as they transition into a new academic term.

Understanding Executive Function Challenges

Executive function refers to a set of mental processes that help us manage time, prioritize tasks, organize information, and regulate emotions. For students with executive function challenges, these tasks can be particularly difficult, impacting their academic performance and daily routines.

Preparing Your Child for Success

  1. Establishing Routines: Start gradually adjusting your child's daily routines to align with their school schedule. Consistency helps in managing transitions and reduces anxiety. If your child is in middle school, have them use an alarm clock (if not already). Create a morning routine together and a way to help them remember it (music playlist, check list, poster, etc.).

  2. Setting Up a Study Environment: Create a quiet, organized study space at home where your child can focus on homework and projects. Minimize distractions and provide tools they can readily access like pencils, rulers, hole puncher, paper, etc.

  3. Reviewing Support Plans: If your child has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan, review it with them to remind them of the accommodations and supports available. Ensure that teachers are aware of these plans and are prepared to implement them effectively.

Communicating with Teachers

It's often the case that teachers may not have the most current information about your child. At times, they may not have even reviewed their IEP or 504 Plan by the start of the school year.
